What is a ceramic ring?
We're not talking about crockery. Jewellery uses zirconium dioxide ceramic – a hard, dense material that rates around 8.5 on the Mohs scale (diamond is 10, steel around 6). That's why the surface keeps its shine far longer than metal does.
Pros and cons, without the sales talk
Ceramic isn't the answer to everything – it has real strengths and a couple of genuine limitations.
- Pro: almost scratch-proof. Everyday wear, keys in your pocket, long hours at the keyboard – the surface stays smooth.
- Pro: gentle on skin. Ceramic is inert and contains no nickel, so it suits sensitive skin too.
- Pro: light and warm. You barely feel it on your finger, and it quickly takes on your body temperature.
- Pro: the colour doesn't change. Black stays black – ceramic doesn't oxidise or fade.
- Con: no give. A hard material is brittle under a sharp knock – drop the ring on a tiled floor and it can crack, where metal would simply bend.
- Con: it can't be resized. A jeweller can't enlarge a ceramic ring, so you need to know your size from the start.

In ceramic, colour isn't a coating – it's the colour of the material itself, running right through the ring. So scuffs and wear won't reveal a different shade underneath.

Two extra tips specifically for ceramic: measure in the evening, when your fingers are slightly wider, and if you're between two sizes, go for the larger one – ceramic doesn't stretch.
How to care for a ceramic ring
- Clean it with warm water and a soft cloth – ceramic doesn't need abrasive cleaners.
- Take the ring off before sport and heavy physical work: the danger isn't scratches but knocks.
