Bracelets: clasps, sizing and why they wear out first
Which clasp you can fasten with one hand, how snugly a bracelet should fit, and why it wears out faster than the rest of your jewellery.
A bracelet differs from other jewellery in two ways, and both are practical: it constantly rubs against desks and bags, and you have to fasten it with one hand. Everything else is a matter of taste.
Why a bracelet wears out first
Nothing touches your earrings. A necklace sits under your collar. A bracelet spends all day sliding along the edge of the desk, the keyboard and the handle of your bag — it's the only piece of jewellery that is effectively being sanded down.
- The underside goes first. That's the part resting on the desk, not the visible top.
- It wears faster on your writing hand. If you only wear one bracelet, it's worth putting it on the other wrist.
- Flat shapes last longer. The load is spread out rather than concentrated on a narrow edge.

Clasps — which ones you can fasten with one hand
- Lobster clasp. Secure, but awkward to fasten one-handed — which is exactly why bracelets go missing more often than necklaces.
- Toggle clasp. Fastens with one hand in a few seconds. It relies on a little weight in the bracelet to stay closed.
- Stretch, no clasp. Nothing to fasten at all. The only condition is getting the size right, because it can't be adjusted.
- Adjustable with an extender chain. Works when you don't know the size, which makes it a safe choice for a gift.
How snugly a bracelet should fit
The right size leaves room for one finger between the bracelet and your wrist, but not two. Any tighter and it digs into your wrist; any looser and it slides down onto your hand and catches on everything.

With a watch and in layers
- On the same wrist as a watch — a thin bracelet, and only one. Two metal pieces side by side scratch each other.
- Layering — mix the widths, keep to one tone. Three bracelets of the same width look like a mistake.
- Leather and metal together — works as long as you keep to one tone. Bear in mind, too, that a leather bracelet can't be washed the way metal can.

The extra care a bracelet needs
Because a bracelet is in constant contact with your skin and hand cream, it needs wiping more often than the rest of your jewellery. That's all it takes — abrasives only speed up the wear.
If the colour has already changed, find out whether it's surface build-up or worn plating: if your jewellery has darkened. Gold plating has its own rules: caring for gold-plated jewellery.

Frequently asked questions
Why does a bracelet wear out faster than a necklace made of the same material?
Because it gets rubbed. The material is the same; the wear and tear is completely different.
Can I sleep in my bracelet?
You can, but night-time is exactly when bracelets are most likely to catch and when clasps come undone. Bracelets aren't usually lost in the street — they're lost at home.
How do I choose a bracelet size for a gift?
Go for an adjustable or stretch bracelet — they fit a wider range of wrists than a fixed size.
